Insomniac=Entrepreneur

So i know Im not wrong when I say that everyone at some point hasy its fhad a hard time falling asleep. It can be from a variety of reasons from Stress to Caffeine, to medical conditions. For smart entrepreneurs however who love to continuously innovate or should i say cant help but to continuously innovate there is a different reason. That reason hat most people don’t really consider is what I like to call “Creative Insomnia”. The Ailment of Genius’s.

So your thinking, what exactly is this “Creative Insomnia”? Well,  Its that wonderful feeling where your lying in bed.. and you know you gotta be up in a few hours and you want to sleep but your mind has other plans. Instead your mind,  decides to go into a creative frenzy and starts coming up with new ideas for your business, your life, your day, you name it and your brain will edit/improve/and create new things for you to conceive.  I am often subject to this lovely condition and often times the ideas are nonsense and don’t make much sense but every so often a great idea will come into my head. Usually I foolishly just say ill remember it in the morning and then forget it the next day. How amazing it would be If i could actually get up when i had one of those gems and wrote it down! that way when I woke up I would have it for sure and could possibly utilize it for something worthwhile!

One of the most famous genius’s in the world suffered from “Creative Insomnia”. Wonder who it is? Well its none other than the great Walt Disney. As one of my idols,  I recently read his biography and was fascinated with it from start to finish. I recommend it to anyone but what really intrigued me was that Walt Disney, one of the most creative and greatest entrepreneurs in the world, had the same condition I did.  He would often wake up in the middle of the night or not be able to go to sleep and have all these ideas  rushing through his head. Instead of ignoring them however he set up a desk right next to his bed so that if he needed to he could pop up and write down his ideas so he can review them in the morning. So if an enormous success like Walt Disney is writing down his ideas, then I can only assume that the rest of us should.

So if your ever struck with “Creative Insomnia” write down your ideas! and your more likely to fall asleep!

Theres Something Curious about Curiosity

cu⋅ri⋅os⋅i⋅ty:

the desire to learn or know about anything; inquisitiveness.

Curiosity may have killed the cat with 9 lives, but it has the ability to save your one.  How you may ask? What exactly does curiosity have to do with my life?  Everything.  William Ward once said, “Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.” What he meant was that without curiosity, The human race learns nothing. Curiosity is the driving force for all of society and humanity in shaping the world  to what it is today.

A Shaping Force

Curiosity is often looked over and taken for granted nowadays. No one really stops to think about it , they just carry on with their busy lives. Why should they care? Dating back to the earliest human ancestors, curiosity has constantly proven to be a driving force in technological and societal breakthroughs.  The caveman harnessed the power of fire to use it for cooking and other things because they were CURIOUS.  They saw something, investigated and were able to figure out how to use it.  They weren’t put on this earth with all the knowledge of what to do and so they had an “itch” to figure it out not just for fun but for survival!

The World Today

Imagine a baby who has just been born and is new to this world. Babies are born curious. They aren’t born with any knowledge instead they explore everything that’s new to them by either touching it.. or putting in their mouths. Little by little they learn how everything works.  When they grow up..we don’tlose that feeling, that natural curiosity. Instead, we just move on to different things to be inquisitive about. We just have to remember that so we can keep on learning.

It has been this way through the centuries, and now fast forwarding to today although we don’t need to necessarily make all our breakthroughs for survival, it still is the leading force in technological breakthroughs. It affects all areas of life including, medical , computers, politics, environment, travel. It doesn’tmatter because curiosity is there to motivate us.  Sometimes a necessity may precede the need to investigate but more often then not it is peoples curiosity to understand their world around them.

Role Model

One of the most impressive people to have pushed the envelope and really take advantage of this childlike curiosity, is none other than the famous Walt Disney.  He was constantly, innovating, and finding new ways to do things. Because of it he was wildly successful and has improved the world for the better.

One of the things he said was:

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

Those new paths hold many opportunities for us, and we should take this wise mans words with us as we continue through our lives.

Jury Duty:Not Fun | Entrepreneur’s Duty:Not Easy

Death by Boredom

As im sure you can all  tell already, I had the utmost luck in having gotten selected to attend Jury Duty. For those of you who aren’t aware, jury duty is the most horrible of nightmares dreamed up by the demons of hell. With our government all about being just, its amazing to me that they have not considered jury duty cruel and unusual punishment. I was stuck in a room with nothing to do  for 5 hours, and then moved into a room to be questioned by the judge and lawyers to see if i was fit to be a juror for another 4 hours. In total i spent 11 hours at the courthouse. Definitely a fun time had by all.  Not only that but I was lucky enough to be chosen to be one of the jurors! I mean seriously, how lucky am I!   However bad it may be, I guess it is one of those necessary evil’s. With all that time to think, I started thinking about the word “duty” and what it really means and how it applies to me besides as a juror.

Defining my Duty

When I first started thinking about duty as I watched the hands of the clock mover slower with every click, I had to think about the different kinds of duties I had. I thought about how I was a student and I had a responsibility to get good grades, I thought about how I was a son and my duty to my parents, I thought about my duty as the president of EXEC, about being a friend and a business owner. As I stumbled upon being a business owner I realized my greatest duty of all, the duty of my passion which is none other than : entrepreneurship. I knew that my definiton of an entrepereneurs duty is different from other peoples so I had to take time to think about how I viewed my duty as an entrepreneur.

The Entrepreneurs Duty

With the economy the way it is,  I had to really breakdown how I felt about my duty as an entrepreneur. I quickly came up with some of the basic duties I had which were to create new businesses and jobs for people so that the economy can recooperate and return to growing, but thats not where it stops for me. Theres so much more to the duty of an entrepreneur in my mind.   Walt disney once said “dont just dream big, dream beautiful”  and thats something I live by. Our job is not merely to create new businesses but to push the envelope each time we create a new business. Push ourselves, society, technology, or SOMETHING a little more each time we create a new business or product. In that way we are constantly progressing and expanding. Go above and beyond to make your customer have an even more immersed experience instead of just a transaction.

Although your own personal definition of your duty may vary, the underlying themes should be constant throughout. I challenge you though not to only think about what exactly your duty is but to fulfill your duties and obligations as an entrepreneur in todays world.
